The Ukrainian Oral History Association Turns 20!

29.10.2025

The Ukrainian Oral History Association was founded in 2006 during the interdisciplinary scholarly conference “Oral History in Contemporary Social and Humanitarian Studies: Theory and Research Practice,” held on October 27-28, 2006, at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

During the conference, participants noted the growing interest in oral history studies in Ukraine. As a result, they decided to establish an informational, consultative, and coordinating center to unite specialists from various fields who use oral history methods or work with interview-based sources in their research. This decision led to the founding of the Ukrainian Oral History Association – a non-governmental, voluntary public organization that became a vital hub for the development of oral history research in Ukraine.

Over the past twenty years, UOHA has achieved remarkable results. The Association has organized numerous conferences, seminars, and roundtables; published many academic collections; and trained a new generation of researchers – students, graduate students, and educators who are now shaping the field of oral history in Ukraine. UOHA members have successfully defended candidate and doctoral dissertations, carried out joint research projects, and established international cooperation.

Yet, the most exciting part lies ahead!

To mark its 20th anniversary, UOHA has planned a series of events and initiatives for 2025–2026, aimed at reflecting on past achievements and outlining new directions for the future. The program will include webinars, podcasts, academic conferences, publications, and other events highlighting the development of oral history in Ukraine and the role of our community in this ongoing process.

Stay tuned for our announcements — let’s celebrate 20 years together!
