The Ukrainian Oral History Association invites you to the second online seminar in the series “Field, Risks, War,” where Hanna Zaremba-Kosovych will present the findings of her research, The Experiences of People with Intellectual Disabilities During Russia’s Full-Scale Invasion of Ukraine.
What do we know about the everyday lives of people with intellectual disabilities in Ukraine? Has this group been studied before? How can we begin researching a marginalized and stigmatized social group?
The first part of the seminar focuses on research methodology—what approaches are best suited for studying the experiences of people with intellectual disabilities, how to prepare for fieldwork, and the specific challenges posed by the Russian-Ukrainian war. In the second part Hanna presents the initial research findings on the experiences of people with intellectual disabilities in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion. The researcher also explores how this data can contribute to academic research and inform the development of a new disability policy in Ukraine. Additionally, the discussion highlights the recently published book “History is Not Without Us: The Formation of the Movement for the Rights of People with Disabilities in Ukraine,” prepared by the public organization Fight For Right / Боротьба за права.
Hanna ZAREMBA-KOSOVYCH is a Candidate of Sociological Sciences and a Research Associate at the Department of Social Anthropology at the Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Her research focuses on disability studies, intellectual disability studies, and qualitative research methods. Since the full-scale invasion, she has been involved in documenting the experiences of people with disabilities through the initiative of the NGO Fight For Right / Боротьба за права. She is also a co-author of the WARPATH project (2023) and co-author of the book “History is Not Without Us: The Formation of the Movement for the Rights of People with Disabilities in Ukraine” (2023).
