During the seminar, participants of the “Unspeakable” project (Volkswagen Stiftung, 2022-2023)—Svitlana Nyzhnikova, Alina Ponypaliak, Svitlana Telukha, and Yevheniia Shyshkina—will share their experiences conducting research after February 24, 2022, and present the collective work Unspeakable: Stories of Ukrainian Women about the Russian Invasion and Evacuation to Germany, published as a result of the project. The publication, based on 100 documented testimonies, reflects on the experiences of living through and speaking about the war, focusing on women’s stories and perspectives. Topics covered include the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, issues of perception and non-perception of events, everyday life during the first days of the war, mutual aid, support and volunteering, the decision to leave Ukraine, women’s experiences in Germany and their adaptation, and the roles of women in the Ukrainian army.
Svitlana NYZHNIKOVA is a Candidate of Historical Sciences and an Associate Professor in the Department of History of Ukraine at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. Her research interests include gender studies, women’s history, and oral history. She has published approximately 15 works dedicated to women’s history.
Alina PONYPALIAK – Doctor of Philosophy (PhD, (Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation), expert. Her research interests include the Ukrainian liberation movement during World War II, the politics of memory in Eastern Europe after World War II, the history of the Holocaust, the history of the Holodomor of 1932-1933, women’s history, gender history, Jewish studies.
Svetlana TELUKHA – Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Studies, Culturology and History of Science of the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”, a fellow of the Leibniz-Institut für Geschichte und Kultur des östlichen Europa (GWZO) (Philipp Schwartz-Initiative of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung). Svitlana’s research interests are related to the study of social history, trauma, the history of everyday life and gender. The scientific research method is more related to oral history. Participant in many oral history projects: “Prisoners of Neuengamme”, “Kharkiv – Don’t Forget!”, “Voices”, “Chernobyl Historical Workshop”, “The Choice to Exist”, “Museum of War Childhood”, “The Unspeakable”, “Kharkiv – My City”. Scientific publications are related to the culture of memory, traumatic memories, and the politics of memory.
Yevgenia SHYSHKINA – Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Studies, Culturology and History of Science of the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”. E. Shyshkina’s research interests cover a wide range of diverse topics related to historical source studies and special historical disciplines. With the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2014, the researcher began to pay much attention to the collection and study of digital and oral sources about the military conflict. The author has published about 15 publications dedicated to Russia’s information war against Ukraine in 2014-2022.
