On May 5, 2025, Serhii Zvilinskyi will speak at an online seminar, where he will share his experiences of preserving cultural heritage in the frontline communities of the Zaporizhia region during wartime.
During the seminar, Serhii Zvilinskyi will present the work of a public initiative dedicated to preserving cultural heritage in the times of war in Zaporizhia region. His presentation will focus on the experience of evacuating, digitizing, and studying family archives that are at risk of destruction; the specific challenges of conducting historical expeditions in frontline communities, where the collection of testimonies, artifacts, and historical materials occurs under constant threat; and the organization of an information campaign aimed at raising awareness among local residents about the importance of evacuating elements of family memory—documents, photographs, diaries—as an integral part of national heritage. Serhii Zvilinskyi will also discuss oral history practices developed within rescue expeditions, as well as public history projects that help preserve and promote local identities and the memory of communities that have disappeared or are under threat. He will reflect on the broader challenges and opportunities facing local history in regions where cultural continuity and collective memory are endangered by war.
