Historians and War: A New Publication on Oral History by UOHA Co-Chair Natalia Khanenko-Friesen and Yuliia Skubytska

Co-chair of the Ukrainian Oral History Association Natalia Khanenko-Friesen and working group member Yuliia Skubytska shared their thoughts on theoretical approaches to studying the Ukrainian oral history “field” and practical aspects of documenting historical testimonies in their article “Historians and War: (Oral) History, Historical Politics, and Decolonization of Eastern European Studies,” published in Ukraina Moderna.

In their reflections, the authors examine key issues, including:

• Documenting war testimonies;
• The impact of war on oral history methods, ethics, and approaches;
• Points of interaction between Ukrainian and Western researchers, among others.

This article offers a valuable contribution to understanding how war shapes new approaches to oral history research and prompts a rethinking of the researcher’s role in the modern world.
