The annual conference of the American Oral History Association, “Oral History: Bridging Past, Present, & Future,” took place in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, from October 30 to November 2, 2024. The event featured several members of the Ukrainian Oral History Association, including co-chair Natalia Khanenko-Friesen, Svitlana Makhovska, Yuliia Skubytska, Viktoriia Nesterenko, and Natalia Otrishchenko.
Ukraine was a focal point in several discussions, including the roundtable “Recording the Stories of the Russo-Ukrainian War: Challenges, Risks, and Methodological Approaches” and the panel discussion “Understanding the Diversity of War Experiences: Case of Ukraine.”
Throughout the conference, Ukrainian scholars underscored the complexities of documenting war-related testimonies and emphasized the need for a more nuanced and informed understanding of Ukraine’s history and present realities within global academic and oral history communities.
